Flexibility for Smart Urban Energy Systems (FlexSUS) (https://liu.se/en/news-item/forskning-for-smart-energiplanering-i-stader) is a 3-year EU project under ERA-Net Smart Energy Systems funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. FlexSUS gears municipalities towards reaching their sustainability goals and EU's desire for Positive Energy Districts in developing a decision support platform that represents the local energy systems within the cities??? urban infrastructures.

The proposed platform integrates regulatory challenges (existing and anticipated ones) into energy planning that is localised at city level and within districts of each partner city. The cities define the sustainability targets and guide the development of the tool to the needs of the administration and their citizens. Sustainability targets are not restricted only to CO2 reduction but also cover an array of socio-economic, behavioural and cultural elements that make modern cities so challenging for energy planning applications. To address these challenges, the platform is open source and open access, designed to facilitate actions for systems integration and support the uptake of Regional Energy Systems including city planners at every step of the process.

Research focus
As a PhD student, you will develop the decision support platform, which is the core of FlexSUS, including development of data management platform, energy intelligence, and analytics platform to support decision making for city planners. The platform is an intelligent tool to support cities??? decision-making regarding design, operations and maintenance of their energy systems, with AI-based data mining and decision making.

The knowledge to be developed shall advance the scientific state of the art as well as contribute to industry practices. The PhD candidate will conduct the research in close collaboration with all other researchers involved in FlexSUS, partner universities (Technical

University of Denmark, Chalmers University of Technology, Erasmus University ??? Rotterdam School of Management), municipalities, need owners, as well as with internationally recognized researchers in the area. 

As a PhD student you will primarily devote yourself to your research. As a PhD student you are devoted to work with education and administration up to 20 percent of full time.

Qualified to PhD studentships are only those who are or have been admitted to graduate studies.

In order to carry out this research, it is critical to have a solid engineering background with focus on Industrial Engineering and Management or similar with knowledge in OR/OM/DSS, sustainability and computer science (especially modelling, data analytics, AI algorithms and tools such as TensorFlow, Python, Matlab etc). You are able to demonstrate good spoken and written English from the interview and written assignment, particularly in academic writing. It???s a merit if you have published scientific papers especially in SCI indexed journals. You can attach English language certificate e.g. IELTS in case your undergraduate study is not done in English.

Appointment time
The appointment will be until further notice for a maximum of one year at a time. A doctoral student may not be employed during a period exceeding eight years. The total time of appointment must not exceed the equivalent of four years?? full time research training.

Starting date
According to the plan in the beginning of September 2019 or by agreement.

The salary for PhD students is based on the department???s salary scale.

Some of the applicants will be nominated and will receive an assignment. This nomination will be informed via email to the nominated applicants before the 9th of August. The assignment will be given on the 15th of August via email. This assignment can be done at any location. The expected time in net to complete the assignment is roughly 8 hours. Link??ping University will make evaluation of the results of the assignment, and some applicants will proceed for preferably an onsite interview or via Skype. The interview will be held either on the 19th of August or the 20th of August. The interview will take less than one hour.
