During crisis management or large scale investigation, tens or hundreds of people from different organisations collaborate to reach a common goal. During this collaboration and due to the expansion of digital work, they must search among mountains of data from different sources, sensors, social networks, knowledge bases and documents to make sense of situations. Further, they must decide to share findings and evidence with other authorized, interested collaborators. Cognitive services are investigated as potential assets to augment the capacity and the ability to make decisions by human actors (Ciechanowski & al. 2018). These services rely on machine learning techniques or crowdsourcing, taping directly into human intelligence to sort, classify, extract information and help people to transform it into knowledge or evidence.??
As we have started to understand the issues related to human, tools and context when there is a need to share informations (Linot & al. 2018), the next question that obviously arises is the impact of these artificial or digital collaborators regarding the same issue. How, when, for what and under which conditions can we expect that humans will agree to collaborate with so-called smartbots or rely on smart objects to conduct their activities, especially when under time pressure or with the control of different security policies when they belong to different organisations.

Among all cognitive services, cognitive assistants such as smartbots are viewed as the most relevant tools to support humans and to enhance their capabilities in solving a wide variety of complex tasks (Le & Wartschinski, 2018). The core of this present proposed Ph.D thesis concerns mainly the trust and confidence that a human being can have in a digital cognitive assistant during crisis management for sharing information following predefined security policies in a peer to peer setting. It is an interdisciplinary work that builds on recent results from the Coast Team on trust and replication such as the ongoing work from Beatrice Linot on trust and data sharing among people in crisis management and the PhD thesis of Vinh Dang on trust in large scale collaboration.



The candidate must hold a Master in Computer Science or in Cognitive Science and has an interest in interdisciplinary research in HCI and collaborative systems. A strong background in distributed systems and security would be a plus.

The PhD is funded by CNRS.
Starting date for the position is 1/10/2019.

This is an inter-disciplinary project in collaboration with the 2LPN laboratory of psychology of the University of Lorraine. It will be co-supervised by Prof. Jerome Dinet.??
