Dear Librarians,

As Vice President of Publishing Ethics & Research Integrity, I am committed to ensuring that the research IGI Global Scientific Publishing publishes is accurate, transparent, responsibly produced, and aligned with international ethical guidelines. This includes protecting our research from AI misuse.

Recently, we have seen an alarming trend across the industry where AI is used to completely generate manuscripts. IGI Global Scientific Publishing has a strict policy on how AI can and cannot be used to support authors in writing manuscripts.

In light of the recent upsurge of AI-generated manuscripts, we are taking active steps to ensure that our manuscripts adhere to AI policies.

IGI Global Scientific Publishing AI Policy

Use in Writing

IGI Global Scientific Publishing allows limited use of AI tools to support authors writing processes. However, as AI can produce incorrect, repetitive, or biased output, authors must provide a level of oversight and control in its usage and must carefully review and edit the content generated. Authors are ultimately accountable for the contents of the work.
Authors may use AI tools to:

  • Support the analysis of data during the research process.
  • Improve the readability of the paper.

Authors choosing to use AI tools in the research and writing process must also disclose the tool and its usage by providing a written statement in the manuscript.

No AI tool will be credited with authorship and authors should not list or cite any AI as an author. This is because only humans have the ability to accept the responsibilities and accountability for the work, such as confirming its accuracy and integrity, of which AI cannot take responsibility.

Use in Figures and Images

Artificial Intelligence (AI) use in image and video creation can result in legal copyright and research integrity issues. As such, IGI Global Scientific Publishing does not permit the use of AI-generated images or videos in its publications. IGI Global Scientific Publishing also does not permit the use of AI to manipulate, augment, remove/conceal, introduce, etc. a feature within an image or figure. Included within this policy are videos, animation, illustrations, photographs, drawings, and other 2D and 3D visual representations. Items such as tables, graphs, etc. which do not use images and are text-based are exempt.

AI Disclosure Statements

If AI was used to support in any way with the development of the chapter, whether in the research, grammar, formatting, etc., authors must disclose its use via an AI disclosure statement at the bottom of the manuscript, above the reference list.

IGI Global Scientific Publishing advises its authors to use the
GAIDeT Declaration Generator (beta version) for assistance generating an AI disclosure statement. Each disclosure statement must include the type of AI that was used and how it was used. Authors may also provide a statement that declares no AI was used to assist with the chapter.

Extensive Integrity Checks

The Publishing Ethics & Research Integrity Team perform integrity checks on each manuscript prior to its publication. These checks consist of a variety of manual and automatic tools (including iThenticate and STM Integrity Hub) that look for markers of extensive AI generated text and figures.

The reference lists in every manuscript are also checked by the Publishing Ethics & Research Integrity Team prior to publication. Any reference lists that have references that cannot be verified and/or are suspected to contain hallucinated references are removed from publication consideration and the editor and author are notified.

AI Detection Tools

IGI Global Scientific Publishing does not rely on AI detection tools to inform whether a manuscript is AI generated due to the high instances of false negatives and false positives. We rely on our expertise in identifying common AI markers in conjunction with automatic checking tools that also look to pinpoint markers including tortured phrases.

We affirm that while AI tools may support aspects of the research and writing process, they must never replace the intellectual responsibility, originality, and accountability of human authorship. At IGI Global Scientific Publishing, we will continue to actively reject completely AI-generated content in order to preserve the integrity of the scholarly record.
